Derailed train in Pakistan

A passenger train derailed in southern Pakistan, killing more than 50 people and injuring nearly 100.

Carriages of the derailed train

The accident happened in Mehrabpur, in Sindh province, when 12 carriages of a train travelling between Karachi and Lahore came off the tracks.

Carriages in the water

Some of the carriages ended up in water. Many of the train passengers were on their way to celebrate the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha.

Crash scene

Such accidents are not uncommon in Pakistan, where hundreds have lost their lives in recent rail disasters.

Wounded taken away from the crash site

Emergency services struggled to cope with large numbers of dead and wounded. Resources on the ground were scarce.

Dead bodies removed from the crash scene

Many people were trapped under the wreckage and cries for help were heard, but equipment to cut open the carriages was in short supply.
