Supporters have turned out to back their candidates in the African National Congress leadership election.
It is the first such contest in 58 years - and feelings are running high.
Delegates inside the hall rose to their feet as the incumbent Thabo Mbeki and the challenger, Jacob Zuma, made their entrance.
The two men - former allies - are bitter rivals and the campaign has been an acrimonious and bruising affair.
Jacob Zuma used to be South African vice-president, but was sacked in a corruption probe - which he dismisses.
One of his supporters, prominent businessman Tokyo Sexwale, was once considered a compromise candidate but withdrew with no apparent support.
