Lax safety on Abu Dhabi building sites

These pictures of building sites in Abu Dhabi were sent in by Aju Sharfuddin, president of Dubai's World Safety Organisation chapter. The WSO campaigns for safety in the workplace.

All the pictures were taken on a single day in December 2007. Each picture shows several breaches of the safety code drawn up by the UAE's construction industry, the WSO says.

Here, as in the previous photographs, the worker should be protected by a guard rail preventing him falling off the edge.

The WSO says safety rules are being broken because the construction companies are under pressure to finish the job early. The door on this lift should be shut.

This cradle was suspended from a tower crane, which the WSO says is very unsafe. It should be hung from fixed position, such as the top of the building.

These men are working above 75m without a guard rail or safety harness. Projects in the Gulf which should take three years to complete, are often finished in two years.
