In pictures: Lebanon bomb attack

Emergency services near burning vehicles

At least four people, including Lebanese army Gen Francois al-Hajj, have been killed in a bomb attack in the Christian town of Baabda, on the outskirts of Beirut.

Soldiers carrying the body of Gen Hajj

It appears Gen Hajj was the target of the attack. He was the army's chief of operations and tipped to be appointed head of the entire force if Gen Michel Suleiman becomes president.

Burning vehicles and crowd

The blast happened in a high security area, which is home to the presidential palace, ministry of defence, several embassies and senior politicians' homes.

Emergency services at the blast scene

There have been many assassinations in the last two years, especially of anti-Syrian campaigners, but not previously of an army leader.

Troops detaining a driver

In the aftermath of the attack, Lebanese troops quickly began detaining people in the area.
