A South Korean cargo train leaves for North Korea as South Koreans wave reunification flags at the Dorasan Station in Paju, South Korea.

The first train to provide a regular freight service between North and South Korea since the 1950s began its journey in the South Korean town of Paju on Tuesday.

The train runs past the southern limit line of the demilitarised zone separating two Koreas in Paju, north of Seoul.

After a short journey the South Korean 12-car train crossed into the heavily fortified zone separating the two countries.

The train arrived in the North Korean border city of Kaesong with a cargo of construction materials.

The North Koreans loaded shoes, underwear and other items produced at a South-North joint industrial complex. The new freight service will operate every weekday.
