In pictures: Diwali celebrations
|
South Africa's city of Durban is home to one of the largest Indian origin populations outside of India, and celebrations are already under way for the Hindu festival of lights - Diwali.
The main event is on Friday 9 November but in the lead up, the city is trying to encourage people from all races to attend the celebrations on the beachfront.
Around 40 floats took to the streets of the city on Saturday, accompanied by street performers, marching bands and dancers. About half a million people turned out to watch.
The festival includes an array of Indian food, garments and trinkets. Zulu and Indian dancers take to the stage together in a fusion of eastern and southern African styles.
The cow is a sacred animal in Hindu culture as it personifies motherly energy. Its milk sustains humankind and it is one of the seven mothers that followers of the religion worship.
The theme of the festival is peace and harmony. This year, the residents of Durban are focusing on cultural tourism.
Their aim is to be as inclusive as possible and encourage people of different religions and backgrounds to mix and get to know one another's culture.
