In pictures: Conkers championship

Competitors turned out in force for the first Scottish Conkers Championship held in Peebles on Sunday. All pictures by Dougie Johnston.

Contenders clearly took events seriously in all four age categories.

Rory Gault-Gordon celebrated success in the 12 to 18-year-old category.

Female competitors proved to be just as strong as their male rivals.

Organisers said the competition was such a success that they hope to hold it again next year.

This kind of concentration proved a winning formula for Max Bone who triumphed in the "rogue" section with his conker from France.

Matthew McDonald picked up the title in the 7 to 11-year-old class.

The action came thick and fast in the Scottish Borders at the weekend.

The strings and conkers flew freely throughout the first championships.

Fiona Griggs said she got "vicious" after taking on her husband in the first round en route to becoming adult champion.
