Onlookers had a close view of a fire which engulfed the Sidney Stringer School close to Coventry's city centre.
The fire began shortly before 1530 BST. Smoke poured over the streets of Hillfields, Coventry.
More than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze which severely damaged the school and saw its gym area collapse.
Drivers heading into Coventry were confronted by the column of smoke which could be seen across the city.
