Umaru Yar'Adua has been sworn in as Nigeria's new president at a colourful ceremony in the capital, Abuja.
He was driven into Eagle Square for the ceremony in an open-top jeep, from which he waved to crowds of supporters.
Military bands and Nigerian soldiers in dress uniforms performed a slow march around the square.
The crowd, containing several Nigerian chiefs, was also entertained by a troupe of dancers and police motorcycle stunt riders.
In a speech Mr Yar'Adua admitted shortcomings in the election that brought him to power, which international observers described as faulty.
