Homes and shops were evacuated in a County Durham market town after a van carrying welding equipment exploded, killing the driver of the vehicle.

Fire crews worked to damp down the area and have sealed off the Market Place.

Geoff Wearmouth was among residents who saw black smoke billowing above the quiet town. The explosion happened after the driver stopped near a shop.
