Abandoned possessions are strewn around the Char Minar gate in Hyderabad, in the aftermath of a bomb blast at the nearby Mecca Masjid mosque.
Thousands of people were attending Friday prayers at the Mecca Masjid, one of India's oldest and biggest mosques, when the bomb exploded.
Ambulances rushed several dozen injured people to hospital. Police said they feared the death toll could rise.
Investigators said two unexploded bombs were also found near the first bomb and defused by police.
Other Indian cities such as the capital Delhi, Mumbai (Bombay) and Bangalore were put on high alert following the explosion.
