With rival rallies expected in the Pakistani city of Karachi, soldiers were out in force securing key points such as the airport.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry flew from Islamabad, hoping to speak at an opposition rally.
But roads from the airport were blocked with abandoned vehicles and clashes soon broke out.
Shots were exchanged between rival political groups.
As well as a number of fatalities, scores of people were wounded.
City streets remained empty in the wake of the violence.
Meanwhile in the capital, Islamabad, police were preparing for a rally to be addressed by President Pervez Musharraf.
