The Sri Lankan capital Colombo was plunged into darkness after two Tamil Tiger aircraft launched a night-time raid on oil and gas installations.
Anti-aircraft fire peppered the sky as air defence units tried to shoot the two aircraft down above the blacked-out city.
Soldiers stood guard outside a gas storage facility in Kerawalapitiya, where a bomb caused a small fire. No injuries were reported.
It was the third Tamil air raid in a month. The planes are believed to be Czech-built light aircraft configured to carry small bombs.
The attack came as much of Sri Lanka was watching TV coverage of the country's cricket team playing Australia in the World Cup final.
