The excitement was palpable as thousands of people turned up to watch Airbus A380s land in New York and Los Angeles.

It was the first time an A380 had touched down on US soil - and two arrived on a single day.

This A380 arrived first, landing at New York's JFK Airport with about 500 passengers on board.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles-bound flight was carrying just a crew.

It was operated by Australian airline Qantas, which will be the first carrier to fly a fully-operating A380 to the airport.
