A Boeing 737-400 plane operated by the state-owned Garuda airline has crashed on landing in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta.
The jet reportedly shook before landing, then veered off the runway into a rice field and burst into flames.
A large number of passengers escaped through emergency doors before the fire, which was said to have started at the front of the plane, broke out.
Garuda airline has confirmed that 22 people died in the crash.
The fire took about two hours to put out and gutted the jet.
Authorities began an immediate investigation at the site. They said it would cover all possible causes, including technical failure, human error and sabotage.
Indonesia's safety record has been in the spotlight recently after a series of accidents.
Investigators have found the airplane's flight data recorders which will be examined for clues into what caused the crash.
