The fire in the Chilean port of Valparaiso broke out early on Saturday, killing at least three people.
The fire, apparently caused by a gas leak, devastated several buildings in the historic district.
The district is protected by Unesco's World Heritage programme.
Valparaiso's mayor, Aldo Cornejo, told the Spanish news agency, Efe, the fire was a "Dantesque spectacle".
Firefighters were brought in from neighbouring cities to help.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet visited the area to see the devastation.
A second deadly fire at the weekend swept through a hotel in the southern city of Punta Arenas.
Officials said 10 foreign tourists had died, among them Argentines and Germans.
An investigation is under way but it is thought the fire was started by an electrical fault.
