There have been violent clashes between security forces and thousands of protesters in the African state of Guinea as a general strike entered its 13th day.
At least 17 people died in running battles with police in the capital, Conakry, and in other towns around the country.
The demonstrators are seeking the resignation of President Lansana Conte, who they say is too old to govern.
Hospitals struggled to treat dozens of people injured by gunfire in different parts of Conakry.
The protests turned violent last week, when 10 people were killed in clashes. On Saturday, Mr Conte made an appeal for national unity.
