A worker is trapped in a building after it caught fire in Dubai

Trapped workers were seen on upper floors waving towels and hanging on to scaffolding as black smoke billowed.

Workers climbing down

Some began climbing down well before the emergency services arrived.

Helicopters

Helicopters were used to airlift them away from the fire and smoke.

Many construction workers in the United Arab Emirates are Asians, mainly from the Indian subcontinent.
