Awards are also given for music and television. Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria, with co-star Felicity Huffman, was voted favourite female TV star.
After being presented the funny male star award by Halle Berry, Robin Williams said in his acceptance speech: "Thank God for having her wear that dress."
The ceremony was hosted by singer and actress Queen Latifah, seen last year in Stranger than Fiction, and heard in Ice Age: The Meltdown.
The Holiday star Cameron Diaz was named favourite leading lady at the ceremony, which is one of Hollywood's first events in the awards season leading up to next month's Oscars.
