In pictures: US Thanksgiving

For many Thanksgiving in the US not only means turkey - it means the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York, this year celebrating its 80th anniversary.

Strong winds and rain in New York also meant a display of umbrellas as spectators braved the elements to watch.

These cheerleaders could not wait to start marching - if only to keep warm.

It was a struggle to keep the giant balloons that are the parade's hallmark from toppling in the wind but Snoopy and other cartoon characters survived the parade.

These young spectators had the best vantage point - a warm apartment overlooking the parade route.

US troops serving abroad had the chance to tuck into special Thanksgiving meals - here served up at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan.

It is not quite like Thanksgiving back home but these soldiers in Gardez in Afghanistan enjoyed their meal which included cheese, sausages and pretzels.

Back in New York, Santa Claus makes his appearance at Macy's parade, signalling that Christmas is not that far away.
