The United States military has been delivering food and other items to Ethiopians affected by floods in the south-east, which borders lawless Somalia.

Flooding

Heavy rains last month caused the Shabelle River to burst its banks. At least 80 people were killed - some by crocodiles - and another 360,000 were affected.

Gode airport

The US military flew from their base in Djibouti, dropping 48 tonnes of aid at Gode airport in Ethiopia's Somali region.

Government flood coordinator Muktar Mohammed says they urgently need helicopters: "We need this food to reach the affected people very soon, very urgently."

US military spokesman Jonathan Friedman said they wanted people to see "we are not just about delivering weapons and blowing things up but we are here to help these people."
