Opposition Democrats are celebrating after making gains from President George W Bush's Republicans in the US mid-term elections.

Democrats have won control of the House of Representatives, but the race for the Senate remains very tight.

While the introduction of new electronic voting machines went smoothly in some states, others reported technical problems that delayed voting and saw polling hours extended.
