Associated Press photographers have been taking rare pictures of North Koreans from across the Chinese border.
Many of those they photographed in the town of Sinuiju were soldiers...
...and some reactions appear threatening.
But children seemed to wave at the lens directed at them from across the water.
The photos put a human face on a country notorious for its secrecy and isolation.
Aid groups are concerned that the new sanctions against the North may hit civilians hard.
People there have endured severe famines in recent years.
But the pictures taken this week from the Chinese town of Dandong offer glimpses of ordinary life...
...including a sample of the hairstyles in fashion in the Democratic People's Republic.
