Meteorologists said Thursday was the heaviest October day of snow in Buffalo in the 137 years of the weather service there.
The snow came with thunder and lightning and cut power to 350,000 people.
Schools were closed and traffic was snarled across a 100-mile (160km) swath of New York State.
Some residents had fun but the Buffalo police department fielded 2,000 calls on Thursday on the weather alone.
The satellite image shows the particularly early seasonal low over the Great Lakes that has been responsible for the snowfall.
