A suicide car bomber hit a US military convoy near the American embassy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Friday.
Debris and body parts were scattered over a wide area by the force of the blast.
Two US troops were among at least 16 people to have been killed.
It is thought that up to 30 people were injured.
Despite increased violence across Afghanistan, such a large explosion in the centre of the capital is unusual.
In the southern city of Kandahar, another suicide car bomber detonated explosives near a Nato convoy. Only the bomber was killed.
