The National Weather Service says more than 50 temperature records have been set in the centre and west of the US in the last two weeks.
The weather is moving across from California, which suffered a historic 15-day heatwave.
People are being warned to take precautions, as some Eastern cities are set to experience temperatures of 38C (100F) on Wednesday.
New York City has opened air-conditioned "cooling centres".
The mayor's office also urged city residents to conserve on their electricity use to avoid power outages.
Public pools have been told to stay open late into the evening so New Yorkers can cool off after work.
But the public have been asked not to open fire hydrants.
