In pictures: Lebanese try to flee

People trapped by the fighting in south Lebanon have been taking advantage of a partial halt to Israeli air strikes to flee.

In the hard-hit town of Bint Jbeil the flags strewing the streets are at odds with the scenes of destruction.

Some were unable to walk out unaided.

This woman had been trapped in the rubble for six days without food or water.

Along the border with Syria, people with just a suitcase to their name have been picking their way across roads too bomb damaged for cars.

These parents have naturally forgone suitcases in favour of helping their children over the stones.

Israel has continued its ground offensive in the south, using air strikes and artillery shells to soften the ground.

Israel has decided to widen its push into Lebanon, although it is not yet clear how far.

Thousands of reservists are being called up to relieve those already on the front line.
