Israel carried out a massive overnight air strike on a building in Gaza where it believed several Hamas military figures were meeting.
The three-storey house in the northern Sheikh Radwan district was flattened in the strike and six people are reported to have died.
It is the first time in nearly three years that the Israeli air force has struck with enough force to destroy a whole building. One man was rescued from the rubble hours after the strike.
About 30 people, including children and women, were wounded, and children were also among the dead, Palestinian medical sources said.
Israel said the attack injured senior Hamas militant Mohammed Deif, whom it accuses of master-minding numerous suicide bomb attacks on Israelis.
Hamas's military wing confirmed Mohammed Deif had been targeted in the attack, but denied he had been wounded.
