Campaigning has started in what should be the first democratic elections in 45 years in Democratic Republic of Congo, due on 30 July...

Some of these have ended in violence - with police attacking protesters with batons and firing tear gas.

... But 19 of the 33 candidates are boycotting the campaign and organising protest marches. They say that despite UN involvement, the elections will not be free and fair.

But posters designers, bill-stickers and T-shirt makers are doing a brisk trade. Afterwards, street sweepers will no doubt be left to clear up...

... While whoever wins the elections will start the enormous task of rebuilding the country.
