In pictures: Bush visits Baghdad

US President George W Bush paid a surprise visit to Iraq on Tuesday, checking out the approach to Baghdad from the cockpit of Air Force One.

Security was extremely high as the president was rushed from the airport to the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad.

The visit was so secret that new Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki was told about his guest only five minutes before President Bush arrived.

The leaders were joined by Iraqi cabinet members and US embassy and military staff, to plot future policy in Iraq...

...while at Camp David in Maryland, US Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice watched and took part in the conference by video link.

President Bush also used his visit to greet US troops and embassy officials, thanking them for the job they are doing in Iraq.
