In pictures: Immigrant protests

Across the US, hundreds of thousands are joining a day of action to protest against proposed immigration reforms.

People of all ages turned out to show their support for the estimated 11.5 million illegal immigrants in the US.

Many young people chose to attend the demonstrations instead of going to school.

One of the biggest demonstrations was held in Union Park in Chicago.

The protesters' flags were also flying in Miami...

And in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans.

In Phoenix, Arizona, passions were running high amongst the marchers.

In New York demonstrations took place at 1216 precisely - representing the 16 December, the day a controversial immigration bill was passed in Congress.

People formed human chains at locations throughout the city.

Small communities of immigrants, such as that in Homestead in rural Florida, have also joined the effort.

Many Latino-owned businesses - like this restaurant in Dallas - have closed for the day.
