An audition of Marlon Brando for the lead role in Rebel Without a Cause has been uncovered. The audition took place in 1947 when he was 23.
That version of the film was never made - Brando did not make his film debut until three years later in The Men.
Several attempts were made to bring Rebel Without A Cause to the big screen but it was Nicholas Ray's version that eventually made the grade.
James Dean famously took the lead role but the film was not released until after he died in a car crash in September 1955.
James Dean was said to have worshipped Brando, copying everything about him from his stance to his mumbling way of speaking.
Despite missing out on the Rebel part, Brando soon became famous for his own rebel roles in films such as A Streetcar Named Desire and On The Waterfront.
He made over 40 films - he is perhaps best known for his role as mafia leader Don Corleone in the 1972 classic The Godfather
The audition footage is included in a new DVD of A Streetcar Named Desire, due out in May.
