In Pictures: King Kong destroyed

The sculpture was created as part of Weston-super-Mare's first sand sculpture event.

The sculpture was carved from a 10ft case of sand

It weighed 20 tonnes and took five days to build

King Kong was due to remain in place until September

Councillor Alan Hockridge said this "was an act of mindless vandalism".

Bottles were found buried in the sand.

Anyone who saw the incident, or has any information, has been urged to contact the police.
