Bastille Day celebrations started with a bang the night before, in the town of Givors.
Jets marked the day and with a fly-past over the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
President Jacques Chirac took part in a military parade down Paris' Champs Elysee.
Mounted Republican Guards were among the forces on show...
... as were members of the French Foreign Legion, in their distinctive uniforms.
Brazilian troops joined the parade, as France's guests.
The events mark the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, which sparked the French Revolution.
Security is tight for the festivities...
...with bystanders subjected to searches.
