In Pictures: How the art was hidden

A lorry driving towards a tunnel

The paintings were driven in secret convoys from London to Gwynedd in the early 1940s

Inside a dark and stony quarry tunnel

Once there, they were transported through long tunnels, deep inside the mine

A lorry manoeuvering a trailer carrying a large container

Some of the pieces of art dated back to the 13th Century and required delicate handling

A large container being inspected as it is moved inside the quarry

Each of the 2,000 works was packed and housed individually

Metal frames inside a vault where paintings were stored

These frames were constructed to keep the paintings in perfect condition
