The Gay Pride march was started on Park Lane, in central London.

Thousands of people are taking part in the march followed by a rally in Trafalgar Square.

A number of the city's streets are closed while the procession takes place.

Saturday's march and festival is the culmination of two weeks of gay and lesbian events.

Speakers at the rally are to include London's mayor Ken Livingstone and actor Sir Ian McKellen.

The floats and marchers weave their way through Westminster and along Victoria Embankment.

Tributes are also being paid to gay barman David Morley, who was beaten to death on the South Bank in October 2004.

Sir Bob Geldof asked gay people to think about the plight of Africa in his opening speech.

Sir Bob said Gay Pride and Live 8 would "stop one vast oppression of a vast minority".

The Pride rally takes place later in the afternoon.
