In pictures: Mao and me

London-based photojournalist Sean Gallagher returned from Beijing in China where he became fascinated by images of former dictator Mao Zedong that could be seen everywhere.

Gallagher says: "I set out to investigate this by photographing a series of people posing for a photograph to show to their family and friends.

"People travel from all corners of the country to stand in front of the famous Mao picture in Tiananmen Square, near the Forbidden City.

"Mao Zedong is the single most important cultural icon in modern China today.

"Everywhere you go there are posters, pictures, watches, books, t-shirts and various tourist items that sport his face.

"It has been 30 years since his death; however he is still the most inspiring symbol in the country.

"Mao's rule changed the very fabric of Chinese society...

"...indeed, only now is modern China recovering from the effects of this time, however he is still revered by modern day Chinese people.

"These photos offer a glimpse into the lives of those linked by one thing...their adoration of Mao."
