The Summer Exhibition at London's Royal Academy of Arts is the world's largest open contemporary art exhibition and features an eclectic range of new work by living artists.

The exhibition, now in its 237th year, runs from 7 June to 15 August and features sculptures, drawings, architectural models, paintings and prints.

Ed Ruscha, elected an Honorary Academician in May 2004, and representing America at this year's Venice Biennale, is the featured artist at this year's Summer Exhibition.

Each year the annual exhibition, which opens to the public on 7 June, features a theme. This year, artists are focusing on the multiple image or object.

Ged Quinn's watercolour is one of more than 1,000 art works featured in the three-month exhibition. Most works are available to purchase.

The exhibition is curated by a rotating committee of practising artists, who select the works from approximately 8,000 submissions each year.

More than 70,000 worth of prizes are handed out each year to artists participating in the exhibition, including the 25,000 Charles Wollaston Award for "most distinguished work".

The annual exhibition has been held, without exception, since 1769 when in began in a Pall Mall warehouse.

Some of Britain's best-known artists, including Gainsborough, Turner, Hockney and the Chapman brothers have exhibited at the Summer Exhibition.
