Egyptian riot police armed with sticks and truncheons broke up a protest camp in Cairo where thousands of Sudanese were living.
The protesters, whose demands for refugee status had been rejected, had been living in a small park outside UN offices for three months.
At first, the protesters tried to stand their ground - some even praying as they were sprayed with water cannon...
... But in the end, the police managed to break up the camp.
Witnesses reported seeing some Sudanese migrants unconscious on the ground.
Twenty of the protesters died and about 30 were injured, Egyptian officials said.
About two dozen police were also injured, the authorities said.
The protesters, who included women and children, were forced on to buses and taken away.
Injured migrants were taken to hospital but for some it was already too late.
