At least 42 people have died in a stampede for flood relief aid in the southern Indian city of Madras (Chennai).

The accident occurred when at least 3,000 people in a queue surged to get into the centre after a downpour began. (Pic: RS Kumar)
Most of the victims were reportedly women in the front of the queue.
Some 37 people, who were injured in the incident, have been admitted to various city hospitals.
