1 of 8 Dozens were killed when a packed bus was hit by a train at a level crossing in central Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

2 of 8 The bus was apparently racing another and entered the tracks when the level crossing was closed.

3 of 8 The driver of the bus is treated in hospital. He has been arrested.

4 of 8 Rescuers at the site at Polgahawela, 80km (50 miles) north-east of Colombo, were hampered when the bus caught fire in the collision.

5 of 8 Witnesses spoke of body parts strewn along the track and people stuck in the bus crying for help.

6 of 8 Dozens were also wounded and taken to nearby hospitals.
