A commuter train has derailed and crashed into a building in Hyogo prefecture, western Japan, killing at least 89 people.

More than 300 people have been injured, with passers-by believed to be among them.

Rescue teams were overwhelmed, and had to use train seats as stretchers.

About 580 people were on the train when it crashed just after the morning rush hour.

The cause of the crash is being investigated. It is unclear whether the driver survived.

Several survivors said the train was travelling faster than usual before it derailed.

Rescuers treated some of the injured at the scene of the accident.

The rescue operation continued into the night, as some people were trapped in the wreckage for hours.
