In pictures: Global photo contest

Readers from the BBC's language websites sent pictures for a competition entitled "Joy and Sadness". The winner was BBCRussian.com reader Vyacheslav Yurasov's poignant photo of a Russian boy recovering after a house fire killed his parents.

In marked contrast, the second prize photo depicts a young girl from a slum in Panama posing happily for BBCMundo.com reader Heriberto Herrera's camera.

Third prize winner Abd el-Rahman al-Hamran captured the despair of three Palestinian girls on hearing of their brother's death after fighting between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen for BBCArabic.com.

Runners up included BBCBrasil.com reader Renata Farache, who sent this picture of a young girl who has been working in a flour mill in Lagoa dos Gatos, Brazil, since the age of three.

BBCMundo.com reader Cristian Palacios spotted these Cuban boys in Havana braving ferocious ocean waves.

BBCBrasil.com reader Clara Gouvea from Brazil was inspired by writer Charles Bukowski to take this picture.
