In pictures: James Dean exhibition

An exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of screen legend James Dean's death is being held at Sony Ericsson Proud Galleries in London.

It features images by US photojournalist Phil Stern and runs from 29 April until 24 June 2005.

Forty of Stern's images are featured in the exhibition, with many of them being shown for the first time.

The photos are of Dean at work, play, and in the studio, and capture his personality beyond his "restless youth" screen image.

The images also aim to show Dean as a multi-faceted personality with many talents and passions, including racing.

Dean died at the age of 24 in a California car crash on 30 September 1955.

The iconic star played just a few bits parts before landing starring roles in three major films, Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant, and was nominated posthumously for two Oscars.
