The Queen Mother's art collection is going on show for the first time on Saturday. It includes this portrait of the then Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon by John Singer Sargent, which marked her marriage to the Duke of York in 1923.

The exhibition is being held at the Queen's Gallery in the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, before moving to Buckingham Palace next year. Visitors can see Lionel Bulmer's The Lamp among the works on display.

John Piper's 1940s view of Windsor Castle was part of a series intended to create a record of the building in case of bomb damage. King George VI remarked to the artist: "You seem to have very bad luck with your weather."

The Queen Mother had a long-standing friendship with Augustus John, who is represented by a pencil drawing of his mistress' son Robin.

The Queen Mother collected 18th- and early 19th-Century British works as well as championing artists of the 20th Century. A Study of a Wall with a House, by Joseph Wright of Derby, dates from about 1773.
