Some tried to run away and hide; others gave themselves up quickly.

Foreign workers were led into open spaces to have their documentation checked.

Those without the proper papers could face canings, fines, or even jail terms.

But many argue that they have no choice but to stay in Malaysia in order to provide for their families.
