The Guinea Pig Club

Sir Archibald McIndoe created a mess in the hospital to make his aircrew patients feel more comfortable.

The men bonded as a group, and formed the Guinea Pig Club

Jack Toper was one of those treated using the tube pedicle technique.

Alan Morgan's hands were damaged by frostbite and gangrene, and his fingers had to be amputated.

However, Sir Archibald created new fingers for Alan by cutting into the palms of his hands. All pictures copyright of Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead
