Nearly 30 years after it closed, waves lap at the burnt-out skeleton of Brighton's West Pier
Owners the West Pier Trust had wanted to restore the pier to its 1920s heyday
Ambitious plans were put together by developers St Modwen
Restoration plans began to look shaky after storms caused part of the pier to collapse in December 2002
The wreckage of the pier still held a fascination for people who would come to look at it in all weathers
The first serious fire in March 2003 tore through the pier's ballroom building
Firefighters on a tug boat tried to dowse the flames
The pier has often attracted media attention - particularly on occasions such as the second fire in May 2003
Lottery funding was withdrawn in January 2004 and five months later half the pier fell into the sea in another storm
The pier still catches the eye of beachcombers, but what will its future bring?
