Typhoon Nabi has been lashing southern Japan, bringing winds of 144km/h (89mph) and torrential rain.
The typhoon's slow speed is making its impact all the more destructive.
Some roads have been closed and ferry services and flights cancelled.
Thousands of people evacuated their homes on the southern island of Kyushu and the neighbouring island of Shikoku.
About 800mm (32 inches) of rain have fallen in some parts of Kyushu in 24 hours.
Nabi was still making life difficult on Tuesday, despite the winds easing slightly after the storm's eye reached landfall.
