Around 1,000 Italian paramilitary police raided homes in Naples in a massive operation targeting Mafia gangs.

Police said that among 53 people arrested was Ciro Di Lauro, son of alleged mobster boss Paolo Di Lauro. A feud within the Di Lauro clan is thought to be behind an upsurge in violence.

The police operation was concentrated on the poor districts of Secondigliano and Scampia. Sniffer dogs and helicopters were used in the police swoop.

The operation dealt a "real blow" to the Naples mafia - known as the Camorra - according to Italy's interior minister.

At least 23 people died in mafia-related violence in the city last month, and more than 100 this year.
